At Quilt Discovery Days, AB QSS members and others volunteer to document quilts with an Alberta connection. Documentation includes registration, an oral history from the quilt owner or maker, an extensive physical examination of the quilt and a photograph. The information and photo are provided to the quilt owner and will be included in The
Quilt Index (quiltindex.org).
We are looking for volunteers to help at one of the following four stations:
Registration
The quilt owner information is recorded, a cloth label is pinned to the quilt (which can be later stitched to the quilt) with an Alberta Quilt Discovery Project number and payment is collected. |
Oral History
The quilt owner is interviewed to find out information about the quilt and it's maker i.e.. has the quilt been exhibited, where did the quilt maker live, what ethnicity is the quilt maker, how did they learn to sew etc. |
Quilt Examination
The quilt is measured, was it sewn by hand or machine, what kinds of fabrics were used, an estimate of the age of the quilt using reference books etc. |
Photograph
The quilt is put on a quilt stand for digital photographs. |
Documenting quilts started about thirty years ago in 1981, when a group of quilt enthusiasts in Kentucky banded together to document quilts in their state. The project fired the imagination of quilt lovers all over the United States and Canada. Currently, 47 states have conducted quilt documentation projects and collected information and images of literally thousands of quilts. The Quilt Index, an online database of quilts, is a direct result of these projects, and forms a rich source of images, history and information on quilts available for anyone interested – http://www.quiltindex.org.
Following the example of the early quilt documentation projects, similar projects in other countries, such as Australia, Britain and Canada have been done. The Alberta Quilt Study Society was formed to pick up the strands from earlier projects in Alberta, and is presently working on the Alberta Quilt Discovery Project. As such, it collaborates with the Alberta Quilt Project of the Western Canadian History Research program of the Royal Alberta Museum. The information collected by the Alberta Quilt Study Society at public documentation days will be shared with the Royal Alberta Museum and entered in the Quilt Index.
